FAQ About Study Permit and Student Immigration

Do you also work with younger students such as those entering middle school or high school?
Yes, we do! We have educational partners for K-12 in Ontario. Our partners for K-12 include Upper Canada District School Board, York Region District School Board, and Carleton District School Board.
What is the best age for a child to move to Canada?

From our experience, coming to Canada at the age of 15 years, or grade 9, would be the best time. Here are the top three reasons:

  • Canadian universities will exempt international students from English proficiency examination (e.g. IELTS, TOEFL) for those who have completed at least 4 years of education in Canada.
  • Higher chance of getting scholarships for universities and colleges
  • Prime age for development of soft and hard skills. Also, students will have enough time to master either English or French, or even both, prior to entering a university or college.
What kinds of scholarships are available for international students in Canada?
There are two main kinds of scholarships available at Canadian universities and colleges. One that covers all tuition fees for the entire program, and the other kind that covers part of the tuition fees. The scholarship candidates may be assessed based on academic performance, English proficiency exam results, community involvement and leadership, or all of these factors. Please be sure to contact your institution regarding scholarship programs available for international students.
Can I work while I am studying as an international student in Canada?
Yes, you can! International students are allowed to work off-campus, without Work Permit, up to 20 hours/week while they are studying and full-time (32-40 hours/week) during the official school breaks. International students can also participate in their institution’s Work Experience program, Co-Operative (Co-op) Education program, and internship at their educational institution. Unlike off-campus work, Co-Op and internship programs, as well as most Work Experience programs, will require you to obtain a Co-Op Work Permit.
How can my child get a free education in Canada?
Canada provides free public education from Kindergarten to Grade 12 to Canadians, immigrants with the Permanent Resident status. Also, if your child is a minor (18 years or younger) and you hold a valid Work Permit or Study Permit, your child can accompany you to Canada and get free education at any public schools. If you are not coming to Canada, there is a few scholarships for international students. However, a full scholarship for international highschool students is very rare and is extremely competitive. A good example is a scholarship by Pearson UWC. For post-secondary education, please check with each institution for the available full scholarships for international students.

  • Canada is one of the world's top 5 countries when it comes to the education system in 2021, according to a study by the U.S. News.

Many international students in Canada get to enjoy the culturally diverse and welcoming community while also getting the opportunities to explore their career options and follow their dreams.

Furthermore, most educational institutions at all levels also offer extra support for international students whether it be English, French, academics, emotional or social support. You will live and study in a society wherein people do care about you.

Beyond the top-tier education system, Canada also offers Universal Healthcare benefits to international students through provincial public health insurance. Getting medical treatment in Canada is so much more affordable than in other countries with the Universal Healthcare System such as the U.S.

International students in Canada are also eligible to work while they study (see FAQ). Upon graduation from an eligible program, the graduates can apply for the Post-Graduation Work Permit to work in Canada and gain a valuable Canadian work experience, and the required number of hours, to apply for the Permanent Residence status.
